The Number One Rule About Search Engine Optimization

Is “Don’t talk about SEO”

I couldn’t resist.  Now let’s clarify up front that a statement like the title of this blog post is ludicrous, and I find that there are more and more “experts” making claims like this within their site pages and blogs.

They use this statement and follow it with their own particular insights about what they feel the number 1 rule is for search engine optimization techniques.

It’s rather amusing that something as liquid as search engine optimization can be clearly define and prioritized.  You can’t lock SEO techniques down and formulate which is more important than the other.  Each person maintains their own concept of what is more important, what is key, what comes dead last, etc.  For some it’s keywords, others focus on link building, or even onsite optimization.

Every site utilizing SEO techniques is going to be completely different, unique in every regard (unless they duped content).  Along with that, each site is going to have its own unique strategy for getting things done.  Those two things alone are going to completely change the requirements and blend of the work to be done for that site.  They will all require different SEO techniques to move them up within the SERPs.

Sure there are some basic steps that nearly every site should go through but even those are dynamic.

Many businesses will find success with a push into organic placement while others will struggle with standard SEO techniques and find that a solid PPC strategy will get them the traffic and (Eventually) subsequent links to help improve their rank.  Other sites might even find that the best way to improve their rank may be through the key placement and syndication of video.

There are a number of factors that play into what kind of techniques work, and there is no “Number One Rule” with seo techniques and your strategy.  Each website owner and marketer will develop a blended strategy that is appropriate to these factors:

  • The target persona or visitor and what they want
  • The style of the site design
  • The niche market
  • The style of content
  • The operating region to market in
  • The content on the page
  • The keyword strength and competition
  • The URL
  • The competitions position
  • The competitions SEO techniques
  • The credibility of the site

The list could go on.  This is just a small representation of the factors taken into account.  With that many variables, no two SEO techniques will be utilized in the same way.  No SEO strategy will be handled the same way.

Many upstarts run into the program of trying to run the same SEO campaign, using the same SEO techniques that other businesses have done and that’s where they run into failure and problems making the results stick.  Success can’t be had by mimicking, at least not in the world of SEO techniques.
