Google recently published an official statement covering the quality of back links and how they affect your website rank. Google wants to make sure people understand their viewport on getting a hold of quality links (among other things – they tend to be a little outspoken)
So if you’re looking to build the quality instead of the quantity, here are some recommendations from Google
Get Involved In Your Community
Specifically around the topic in which you work, or your niche. Interact and contribute on various channels such as forums and blogs where they relate to your site. When you can establish a good reputation people will naturally want to visit your website. For many people with sites, especially blogs, if they like a site they’ll often link to it or reference it within a post/sidebar for their own readers to benefit
Keep The Content Compelling
But not just that. Make sure the content is long lasting and that it’s unique. You want to be as unique as possible. The last thing you want to do is sound like everyone else. The more compelling that unique content is, the more people will be interested and setup links to it. On top of unique posts and articles, try to offer up useful tools through your site that people can utilize.
Be A Problem Solver
If you offer solutions to common problems for your target market, specifically on your site or somewhere within your content marketing then people will be more apt to link to it. The more value you offer, the more attention your content will receive. Tutorials, FAQs and Videos can help put your site on the map.
If you can offer original research, surveys and reports you can also attract a fair number of links. These methods increase your rapport and credibility with people and position you as a true thought leader.
Have Some Personality
Humor is an effective way to connect with people. Do you have an opportunity on your site to offer a humorous message or share some amusing content? If you can get people to crack a smile and enjoy a few minutes within your pages then there’s a good chance they’ll link back to you to share it.
Just remember that humor, like many things, is a link bait tactic. Sometimes it can go viral, but for the most part it’s a short lived strategy that only lasts so long. It’s intended to supplement a long term strategy, not stand on its own.
Directories Are Helpful
Directories are not all bad, even though I’ve warned people to avoid them. The fact is, there are good directories and there are bad directories. If you want to submit your content to a directory, make sure that it’s a directory that covers the topic you’re writing for, that it’s a moderated directory and that it’s well structured.
You don’t want to submit your site to a link farm or do a mass-submit to hundreds of directories. Do it yourself, do it careful and choose wisely.
Don’t Spam
That’s pretty obvious. Keep in mind that legit link building strategies provide long-term effects when they come from long-term efforts. Anything else is short term and probably pretty spammy. Avoid these if you care at all for the reputation of your site. Don’t purchase page-rank passing links. If your position in the SERPs is that important to you, then manage it right and reap the long-term benefits.
If SEO is on your mind and you want to build rank then this is the best place to start: building back links. Do it right, and you’ll be amazed at the impact it can have on your site.
