The Top 7 Overlooked SEO Strategies (Part 2)

Welcome back.  Yesterday I covered some basic principles that a lot of people overlook when considering SEO.  Continuing the theme today, we’ll look at Frames and Real Time search and… dreaded Page Pirates – aaargh.

Pushing out of Frames – Javascript is a handy tool that can do a lot of things for a webmaster.  There is a simple code that you can add to your <head> section that will allow your site to break out of any frame.  This is useful if you have a visitor hitting your site using Google Image Search or another site that links to you using an Iframe or other frame design.  It breaks the frame and loads your page into the full window.  Use this script to keep traffic on your sites and out of other peoples frames.

<script language=”JavaScript”>
if (top.location != self.location) top.location.replace(self.location);
</script>

Been hacked lately?  How positive are you? – Hacking is still as common as it was 10 years ago, and when your site is hacked it doesn’t have to be malicious in nature or send your server into death throws.  You can end up with a hack that brought malicious links into your pages.  Outbound links to point to “bad neighborhoods” or inappropriate text that does the same.  While it’s not extremely common it’s not unheard of.  You can perform a domain search on google and review what URL’s are indexed.  You can also perform a navigation check  that examines and displays all the links on your site.  If you never look, you likely wouldn’t know they’re there.

Real Time Search – We’re in the initial launch of Real Time searching and there are a lot of people holding their breath to see how it will affect marketing in the long run.  With real time search, the overall “freshness” of results is the major focus of search engines like Google. Especially Google.

By updating your site regularly, you provide new content that draws the search engines back to you.  There are a number of methods for doing this, most of which are standard fare yet a lot of business don’t use anything of these.  Resources like reviews, comments, forums and even blogs. One of the greatest untapped resources you have is existing, outdated content.  You can take any content you have that’s been online for some time and revisit it, rewrite it and post it as a new product/information pack

If keyword popularity changes, and they often do, the search results tweak to show the most updated content.  You could gain a sudden rush of traffic simply by updating information you’ve had on your sites for months, even years.

If you’re looking for off-site exposure (Who isn’t?) then get started using the majior social media sites like Twitter and Faecbook.  If you haven’t yet, you need to be.  That’s a drum I won’t stop banging on.  The traffic potential is only limited by the number of people online.  While links from the major social networks are nofollow, the traffic exposure is still picked up by the major search engines and will without a doubt increase your sites authority.
