Video sharing sites are veritable goldmines for throwing viral traffic toward a site. It’s one of the most popular sites online and last stats showed it to be the 3rd largest search engine. Video marketing should be including as a piece of every internet marketing strategy and when handled correctly can produce a large viral following.
I recall one of my first run ins with video marketing to produce traffic for a client site (client information confidential). I had filmed a half dozen quality videos for a particular niche that were about as solid as you could get for a decent web video. I uploaded them to YouTube and laced them with great descriptions and targeted keywords. I then left the videos to sit, stew and bring in lots of great traffic.
I checked back several weeks later and to my surprise there were very few views. They had hardly been visited and they weren’t generating any additional traffic for the site. The videos I put up had been buried under the other tons of content streaming forth from the internet fire hose.
Not willing to give up so easily I filmed two more clips, and then contacted a few successful blogs within the same niche. I offered use of the videos along with some guest posts to accompany the videos.
Shortly after the launch of the content, the site started receiving exponential leaps in traffic, video search results and views within YouTube. While the videos didn’t go viral in the sense of hitting millions of views in a few days, they were shared and got carried quite a distance by viewers. Those videos generated (and are still generating) a lot of traffic to the website of that client
The take away here is that there is a lot of variables in generating a traffic surge through video sharing sites for video marketing. If you want to succeed in making a video go viral then you need to plan out your established path of distribution beforehand. That way you’re building back links to the video itself. This increases the rank and relevancy of your video, which will put it in the eyes of other viewers that search your key words. This will get your video seen more readily, and thus push traffic to your site through quality video content and video marketing.
By taking the time to position your video properly through marketing to the search engines, you’ll begin to see a surge of traffic TO your video. Once the traffic sees your video it will get shared more readily and turn that traffic toward your website. The perfect funnel.
It only took 30 minutes to share the content with other blogs in the niche, and the client is still feeling the effects of that decision and marketing strategy today.
