6 Tips for Using Twitter for Business

Twitter is continuing on an upswing despite recent maintenance issues and various outages.  It’s caused no issue with people as they continue to use Twitter for both social and business purposes however as many continue to run their show through the social media service.

If you’re looking to make a splash on Twitter with your business, make sure you follow these Twitter Business Tips to get you started on the right foot.

Twitter Business Tip 1 – Know Your Audience

Since its classified as a community, that means there are individual people.  With any gathering of people there are rules to be followed and methods you need to use to engage those people.  In order to make sure you’re taking part in everything properly, read the rules of the system and spend time watching how others interact.

Target the people you plan to market to as far as your consumer base and learn how they interact with one another.   Find out what they like to share, what they like to discuss and the taboo topics they don’t like.

Twitter Business Tip 2 – Act As One Of The People

In order to connect with people, you have to stop acting like a brand or a company and start acting like a brand ambassador.  That way you have a more human side, you’re personable, believable and someone that can be trusted.

Credibility is important when promoting your business in a pre-sell environment where you want to network with others and share content.  People don’t want to connect with a business, they want to connect with the people running that business.

Twitter Business Tip 3 – Conversation Is Key

You can’t run a successful campaign on Twitter by launching non-stop links promoting your sales, products and services and expect people to stick and care.  By engaging with others in open dialogue you bring eyeballs to your posts and encourage engagement.  That engagement will make or break your Twitter campaign, because people won’t want to stay networked with a bot spewing out updates.

Twitter Business Tip 4 – Act As An Ambassador

As previously mentioned, you have to act as an ambassador.  That means a lot more than just acting like a person when engaging people.  You can’t hand over the social media marketing to a complete newbie.  It should be handled by someone with a keen understanding of the company and of social media.  That individual also needs to be able to avoid personalizing the account.  That way, negative comments aren’t taken personally and “irate” posts aren’t made by the individual handling your account.  Best foot forward always.

Twitter Business Tip 5 – Give People Reasons To Follow You

One of the main reasons people like to follow others is that the information they post is amusing, interesting and sharable.  Information that can be shared and passed around gives each person sharing it the persona that they provide value.  If you’re regularly sharing good content that people enjoy, content that is frequently shared, you can expect more engagement from your followers and additional followers over time thanks to that great content.

Twitter Business Tip 6 – Don’t Forget To Track

It’s important to stay engaged, and that means tracking conversations and seeing who is talking to you.  Frequently check your direct messages and your @replies to see if someone is trying to engage you.  The last thing you want to do is come off like you’re ignoring people or blowing them off because you’re not keeping track of things.

These are just a few tips to get anyone looking and walking in the right direction when  bringing their business into social media.  Just remember to avoid acting like a robot and keep the person front and center.
